SHAHID

I have a lot to take care of before the night is done. One thing is to find out why the fuck Chione is giving me the silent treatment. She’s walking around our room like she’s a goddamn zombie trapped in her own head. I try to get her to talk, only for her to give that, “Oh, nothing,” bull I can’t stand. I’m not blind. There is something wrong, so get it off your chest.

“Listen, I have to handle things with dad and Chadli. When I get back, you’re going to tell me what’s crawled up your ass and died.”

I’m out the door before she can lie to me again. I’ve been chosen to rule, yes. I just never thought I would be running around to put out fires in my own family. Taking the stairs on the hanging staircase two at a time, I head into the kitchen, which isn’t a short walk. My home has been dubbed the most expensive home in Dubai. It sits on the artificial island of Palm Jumeriah with a price tag of $60 million.

“Listen up,” I order upon entering the kitchen. I don’t have time to take into account it’s an area of the house I’ve never entered before or the flabbergasted looks. “Mistress Chione has her own staff and that includes her own cook. Her meals will be prepared by him and served by her staff only. The items needed to prepare her meals will be bought by her staff only beginning tomorrow. That includes when we are entertaining. You all know my rules.”

I’m gone before I can see the bows. We are on my tuft now. This is a dangerous game I’m entering, a game that can end in poison or other forms of death. I’m not taking any chances. That’s why early tomorrow morning, I’m doing a vetting of the entire staff. Coming to the room, I pause to exhale and to give up a prayer to Allah for strength.

“Father.”

He casts his eyes on me from behind his laptop and then dismisses me.

“I guess that means you know why I’m here.”

“I don’t want to take the wind out of your sails, so say what you came to say.” He smirks.

I shrug. “You know you need to cut the shit.”

His brow aches. “So, I’m the only one shoveling the shit?”

“You know damn well—”

“No, you know damn well that I don’t bend over to scoop up shit to eat. Your brother is being an asshole,” he snarls.

“What my brother… Why the fuck am I calling him that? What Chadli is doing is normal. He’s only seen you what? Once, twice, and I’m being generous, in his whole life. Now, here you come to make things right. You really think he’s going to do a dance like on Christmas morning? Come on, man,” I fume.

“Why do I feel as if you feel the same way?”

“Shit, because I kinda do too on some level. I remember seeing Ma trying to fish for information about you on the sly.
